The competition takes place mostly in the national park area, consisting of rock plateaus (covered by dry pine forest with heather and reindeer lichens) and spruce forest slopes and depressions between the higher areas. The national park is famous for its numerous small lakes, with more than a dozen lakes in the competition area. The mammal fauna on the area includes, e.g., moose (Alces alces), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans), brown bear (Ursus arctos). Among the birds nesting in the area are such as red-throated loon (Gavia stellata), osprey (Pandion haliaetus), whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus)and western capergaillie (Tetrao urogallus).
